Biography

Angélique Léonard is a full professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Liege. She graduated in Chemical Engineering (1998) and Applied Sciences (2003) from the University of Liège. She first pursued her career at the FRS-FNRS (Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research) as a research fellow (2004-2007) and then as a Research associate (2007-2009). She then obtained a teaching position in 2009 on sustainable chemical processes. She was then successively promoted to Professor (2013) and Full Professor (2017). She chaired the Department of Applied Chemistry from 2011 to 2015. From 2016 to 2022, she was the Director of the Research Unit in Chemical Engineering. Within this RU, she is part of the PEPs (Products, Environment, and Processes) group, which employs about twenty people active in the fields of (bio)chemical reaction engineering, separation technologies, multiphase systems, design, simulation and optimisation of large chemical systems and sustainable development, under the responsibility of four academics.

Over the past twenty years, it has developed expertise in understanding the mechanisms governing the drying of deformable materials, in particular the establishment of links between the drying conditions and the final properties of the material. To this end, an original methodology based on the use of X-ray microtomography has been developed to monitor the textural changes undergone by the product during drying. This methodology has been applied to various types of materials (slurries, gels, cementitious materials, soils, etc.). More recently, its activities have been extended to the study of the environmental impact of processes by life cycle assessment (LCA). These activities include the LCA of various processes/products, support for the eco-design of processes/products, the production of carbon footprints, the production of critical LCA reviews, the drafting of environmental declaration sheets and the production of training courses, particularly through the Greenwin centre. The fields covered are varied: the chemical sector, energy, agri-food, biofuels, transport, construction materials, batteries, etc. The unit's LCA activities are pursued through European, federal and regional projects or via consultancy services for various industrial partners. A. Léonard has co-authored more than 140 articles in international journals and more than 120 conference proceedings.

She has received several awards including the Frédéric Swarts Prize of the Classe des Sciences of the Royal Academy of Belgium for a work in pure or industrial chemistry, 33rd biennial period, 2002-2004.

Since January 2017, she is the Chair Woman of the 'Drying Working party' at the level of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. In this capacity, she chaired the organising committee of the 6th EuroDrying Conference held in Liege in 2017. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the International Drying Symposium. She is a member of the Women and Science Committee, which she chaired from 2018 to 2020. She is a director of the ASBL Valbiom, the GREENWIN competitiveness cluster and the B-IWA (Belgian Branch of the International Water Association).
