THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL POINTS OF VIEW

The presentation is organized in three parts.
In the first part, we will recall the importance of immaterial surfaces in mechanics, physics and science in general. These surfaces are the seat of discontinuities and migrate through matter (unlike material surfaces which are attached to matter).
In the second part, we will study the common points and differences in the theoretical modelling of the motion of these surfaces according to the physics involved.
Finally, classical methods for tracking these surfaces will be presented as well as a completely new approach.
Short CV of Prof. Nicolas Moës
Nicolas Moës' research focuses on fracture and contact mechanics. The approach, called X-FEM, which he initiated in 1999 with Ted Belytschko and John Dolbow has greatly simplified the simulation of crack propagation by finite elements. More recently, with his collaborators in Nantes, he has created a theory unifying damage mechanics and fracture mechanics, as well as an original approach for the treatment of variational inequalities, such as those involved in contact.
